Abstract

Abstract

The ability to read Arabic texts is a fundamental component of linguistic competence, particularly in understanding meaning and interpreting grammatical structures. However, previous studies have largely focused on grammatical competence in written contexts or theoretical analysis, with limited attention to grammatical errors in oral reading performance, a context that remains underexplored. Field observations of final-year students at Baitul Arqom Islamic Institution in Jember revealed a high frequency of grammatical errors in oral reading, indicating a lack of practical application of grammatical rules. Therefore, this study aims to identify the most common types of grammatical errors and determine their frequency distribution, providing an empirical description of students’ syntactic difficulties in actual reading practice. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method with a total sample of 46 students. Data were collected through audio recordings, then transcribed, classified, and analyzed using frequency and percentage calculations. This study is limited to descriptive statistical analysis without inferential testing. The results showed a total of 2,151 errors, with the highest percentage occurring in verbal sentence at 58.25%, followed by complement at 26.73%, then the copular particles in nominal sentence at 8.83%, and the lowest proportion in nominal sentence at 6.18%. Furthermore, the most frequent errors were associated with the direct object, followed by adjectives and subjects, indicating limited syntactic awareness during oral reading. These findings highlight the need for enhanced instructional strategies, particularly through guided syntactic reading practices and the integration of grammatical rules with phonetic application.
